Losing It #5

My second edition in just under a week and I have some things to share with you. First off, I want to share with you that I am down a total of 16.4 pounds and it does feel great. I got up yesterday morning and went out for my walk/run and got in 3.18 miles in 50:38 with pace of 15:55. That is slower than my workout yesterday but my course wasn't as flat either.

I also burned my 9,988th calorie yesterday and made it past the 75 mile mark for a total of 77.5. Looks like I'm going to hit the 100 mile mark before the end of the year. I never thought this was a possibility when I started walking almost two months ago.

I had to delay the start of my C25K program because I had a sore leg and couldn't walk or run because it hurt so bad. I did walk a couple of days with no running but picked the running back up on Wednesday. I don't have a date that I want to start the C25K program but it probably won't be long.

The last thing that I wanted to share with you was the GPS that I'm using now. I was very active in ham radio several years ago and kind of got out of it and decided to sell one of my last hand held radios on eBay. I did and got enough money to purchase the Garmin Forerunner 405. I've used it now for a few runs and wouldn't want to run without it now. It's much liter than the iPhone and I don't have to worry about sweating and ruining my iPhone. I like the fact that I can customize the screen with the information that I want to see during my workout. The defaults worked good for me. I want to see the time, distance, and the pace of my current lap (currently auto laps every mile) so I know if I need to speed up or not. Runkeeper would only tell you the overall pace of your workout.

Thanks for stopping by and if you have any comments be sure to leave them below. Thanks again and I will see you again here soon.

Losing It #4

It’s been over two weeks since I’ve written anything for Losing It and I’ve got a lot to share but I will spread it out over a few post. Today I wanted to focus on the apps that I used to start out with and one that I’m still using. I’ve previously reviewed these apps on my Tech Talk Thursday post but now that I’m actively using them I can be a better reviewer.

The first app that I started out with during my journey to lose weight is Lose It! This is a simple little program that you use to keep a journal of what you are eating and it will budget calories based on your weight and how much weight you want to lose per week or maintain your current weight. It also will let you add friends to get motivation from but will only share how much weight you have lost and now your weight. When you enter what you eat on the iPhone it will update the LoseIt.com website and when you enter the info into the website it will update on your phone keeping everything in sync.

The second app that I was using is Runkeeper. There is two versions of Runkeeper. I started out with the free version but upgraded to the Pro version. Both versions offer to keep records of your pace, speed, time, and distance. The Pro version also offers you split times and audio cues. Both versions also let you sync Runkeeper.com and you can go there and get details of all of your activities and see your weekly and monthly milage.

I’m currently kind of on the disabled list and can’t walk/run as much as I’d like. To date I’ve lost 14 pounds and am using the Lose It! app on a daily basis.

That’s going to do me for now. Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you again soon.

Losing It #3

I can hardly believe that it's been over a month since I started working towards my goal of running a 5K in less than 30 minutes. In the month of October I logged 48.7 miles and my best week was 14.8 miles.

Although the only goal that I really had in October was to get up and start moving I do have some clear goals for November thru January. Last week I started inserting some running into my workouts and improved my pace. Starting the week of Thanksgiving I am going to drop my workouts from five to three per week. I may still have some easy days of walking but my main focus is going to bee on the Couch to 5K program.

The C25K program is a program designed to get you from the couch to running 5K without walking or stopping. I did find a few apps for the iPhone that did this program but I simply programmed my Runkeeper Pro to give me the audio cues of when to walk and when to run. It's true you can't really start out from the couch and go straight into this program. First you need to build a base of walking and then start C25K. I will keep you posted on my progress on the program.

It's been almost a week since I weighed in but as of last Friday I am down another 2 pounds for a total of 8.2 pounds. Last Wednesday I did take a day off from logging my food but I don't think it had much of an impact on my weight lose.

That's going to do me for this edition and thanks for stopping.
